Who We Are

About Obu Ihuoma

A brotherhood of Abiriba men — united in the pursuit and celebration of good fortune since 2015.

Introduction

The meaning of our name.

Obu Ihuoma draws its meaning from two pillars of ancient Abiriba culture.

Obu is the traditional gathering place — the heart of communal life, where men meet to share wisdom, strengthen unity, celebrate, and preserve heritage.

Ihuoma means good fortune — a life marked by blessings, prosperity, peace, and positive outcomes.

Together, Obu Ihuoma represents a gathering of brothers united in the pursuit and celebration of good fortune. It is a community where members come together not merely to socialise, but to uplift one another, promote wellbeing, and attract progress and shared prosperity.

Origin

How it began.

Obu Ihuoma is neither an age grade nor a circle of friends — it is a unique social and cultural institution. Obu Ihuoma Social Club International is made up of men of integrity committed to improving the welfare of its members, the Abiriba community, and society at large.

The idea was born out of the need for Abiriba men residing in Rivers State to come together — irrespective of age grade or social status — on a platform where they could celebrate, share wisdom, strengthen brotherhood, and preserve the rich traditions of Abiriba away from home.

Obu Ihuoma was formally established on 15th August 2015, following a meeting of the Abiriba Communal Improvement Union (ACIU), Port Harcourt Branch. After the meeting, the pioneer members found purpose in staying back to interact, reflect, and share ideas — an act that laid the foundation for what has become a strong and united body.

Our History

From a single gathering to a global brotherhood.

2015

Early Leadership & Structure

In its formative years, Hon. Chief Mang Iwo served as Eze Obu, providing the leadership and foundational support needed for the growth and stability of the association.

The club entered a period of transition when Hon. Chief Mang Iwo relocated from Port Harcourt to Lagos. This created the need for a more structured and forward-looking leadership framework.

2019

A New Direction

In 2019, a decisive step was taken to reposition the association through the formation of a new Executive Council (EXCO), led by Hon. Onyeani Okidi as Eze Obu.

Under this administration, Obu Ihuoma recorded remarkable progress: strengthened member welfare, increased participation in social events, significant membership growth, and solidarity during the COVID-19 period.

2021

Succession & Continuity

In 2021, the mantle of leadership passed to Hon. Igwo Onwuka as Eze Obu — a smooth and orderly succession that reflected the strength of the structures built by earlier administrations.

His tenure consolidated the gains of the association: member welfare deepened, ties across the wider Abiriba community grew stronger, and the traditions of brotherhood and service remained at the heart of every activity.

2023 – Present

Rebranding & Registration

In 2019, the association was rebranded as Obu Ihuoma Social Club International, reflecting its expanding reach beyond Nigeria. The same year, the club was officially registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

Today, Obu Ihuoma continues to grow in status and influence, with a strong network of members across Nigeria and the diaspora — over 70 notable members, including more than 30 residing abroad.
